Where Golf Meets Grandeur

The last couple of years have ushered in a new era of private golf club development in South Florida, where exceptional courses have been routed across dynamic topography and designed by some of the sport’s most prolific architects. These are not the flat, soft layouts that most envision when they think of golf in South Florida. And Atlantic Fields, one of Discovery Land Company’s (DLC) newest clubs in Hobe Sound, is leading the way.

Across the club’s 1,500 acres of land (about twice the area of New York’s Central Park), the development company employed a bold, dig-and-build strategy, one that saw close to seven million cubic yards of earth moved to build a captivating layout for golf. Sprawling lakes that blanket 84 acres were dug. Tom Fazio, who has designed the vast majority of the courses at DLC’s other properties around the world, was given carte blanche to build his ideal golf course. In fact, because Fazio lives nearby, he was on site nearly every day touring the grounds and making constant modifications to the design. In time, those who are fortunate enough to tee it up at Atlantic Fields will know they’re playing as pure a Tom Fazio–designed course as they’re likely to find anywhere in the world.

Discovery Land Company’s Atlantic Fields in Hobe Sound offers amenities beyond golf.

While the golf course will take center stage, Atlantic Fields’ appeal as a members-only club goes far beyond the fairways. Staying true to Discovery’s modus operandi, the club is designed to be multigenerational, and as such, it offers a slew of non-golfing amenities, including an equestrian center, holistic farm, racquet club, adventure center, and more. Like Discovery’s other clubs, membership is only available to those who invest in the Atlantic Fields’ residential real estate, of which there are 317 home sites.

“We’re looking for a destination that will strike the perfect ‘Discovery’ balance of ambiance, accessibility, and the opportunity to integrate built environments into natural landscapes,” Discovery’s Founder and Chairman Mike Meldman explains. “What initially drew me to Hobe Sound was its charming small-town ambiance, unique blend of nature and culture, and endless recreational opportunities on land and in the ocean.”

The Best of Golf Style, available at Bal Harbour Shops

Golf has always had a signature sartorial look. It’s clean, it’s classic and it’s unfussy. Think: short-sleeved polos, country club prep, and a pragmatic take on the term we now all know as “quiet luxury.” And while the best golf style keeps things crisp and simple, there’s no harm in upping the luxe factor. In fact, we highly recommend it. From Brioni’s dedicated golf pieces to swing-ready dresses at Bottega Veneta, we’ve pulled together everything you need for a seriously stylish day on, or at least inspired by, the links.
