Early autumn’s incoming vibes are set to bring a slightly subtler palette than summer’s pop, along with richer textures. The clock is ticking, and it’s time to update your handbag rotation.

Transitional bags this season lean toward a quiet confidence: silhouettes that hold their own, with an iconic underline. Balenciaga’s reissued Le City, for example, channels early 2000’s nostalgia but feels right for the moment, too. Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo, its name meaning “let’s go” in Italian, pairs the house’s belove intrecciato leather with a sense of pragmatism that’ll carry you from a morning boat ride to the boardroom to a beach-side cocktail. And Loewe’s Puzzle bag gets a crafty upgrade–designer Jonathan Anderson’s biggest hit for the label is still going strong, despite Anderson’s departure to join Dior.

These bags aren’t about playing into the leaves changing and the temperatures dropping, so to speak; they’re about signaling a subtle shift from summer’s sun-bleached exuberance to autumn’s more nuanced elegance.

Let’s go.

  1. Balenciaga espresso waxed suede purse with brass hardware

    Balenciaga

Balenciaga’s Le City bag is an icon, and it’s as relevant today as it was when it was released in the 2000’s.
  2. Bottega Veneta white and blue large tote

    Bottega Veneta

A nautically-natured Andiamo from Bottega Veneta. We love the unexpectedness of this bag; it’s sort of a boat tote, but given an ultra-luxurious finish.
  3. Chanel black quilted calfskin purse with gold tone metal hardware

    Chanel

Cool in the most upscale way possible, Chanel’s 25 Backpack makes a statement wherever it goes. And, truthfully, this bag is timeless–but we do love it especially for fall.
  4. Dolce & Gabbana red purse with quilted nappa leather and a gold and diamond heart embellishment

    Dolce & Gabbana

Wear your heart not on your sleeve but your shoulder this fall with this cute and fun evening bag from Dolce & Gabbana.
  5. Fendi pink calfskin leather bag with a short handle

    Fendi

Fendy’s iconic Spy bag is back, and we’re obsessed with this not-quite-fuchsia shade. It’s Miamian in its color-likeness, but given a soft, slightly shaded impression. Super chic while still standing out.
  6. Loewe brown puzzle edge landscape bag with geometric lines and a cuboid form

    Loewe

What we love about this Puzzle bag: the braided leather handle (which is atypical on this model), and the artsy “landscape” detailing on the side panel.
  7. Miu Miu white leather bag with a short handle

    Miu Miu

Clinically cool Miu Miu is always a safe bet, especially with this uniquely boxy shape.
  8. Saint Laurent pink shearling fur bag with a long gold chain handle

    Saint Laurent

Don’t give up on all the color. If going big, add rich texture, such as seen on this Kate bag from Saint Laurent.
  9. Valentino black handbag covered in black rhinestones

    Valentino

Another way to nod to the season’s change is with evening sparkle; Valentino’s VSling is an elegant example.
  10. Versace red hobo bag made of nappa leather

    Versace

Simply put, this Versace hobo bag is plain cool, and would look great with a white tee and jeans. Easy!
