Style Diary: Giovanna Battaglia

It comes as no surprise that Giovanna Battaglia finds herself in a dilemma common to most New Yorkers: an expansive wardrobe that outsizes her closet space. In fact, the international fashion icon, who began her career as a model, cites Carrie Bradshaw—the Sex and the City character known for amassing a designer shoe collection worth as much as her apartment—as the ultimate glamorous New Yorker. The fashion editor, stylist (and “fashion geek”) describes her look as eclectic, with lots of different prints and textures in her closet mixed with classic shapes that somehow all link together.

Statement Shoe
"Maybe not the most ideal shoe for city walking, but I still love this fun Dolce & Gabbana platform." One of Giovanna’s go-to designers, this spring the shoes at Dolce & Gabbana were infused with an Italian fifties holiday-postcard vibe decorated with embroidery of colored-straw strips and pompoms or with heels molded from bamboo staying true to the classic handcrafted traditions of Sicily.

Artsy Excursions
"I love the Matisse exhibition at the Met! I could go back every day if only I had the time." The great French modernist was known for his fluid and original draughtsmanship. The Dream by Henri Matisse uses characteristics common in many of Matisse’s paintings, a female model depicted with sensual line qualities and rich color.

Coffee Break
"Sant Ambroeus has the best cappuccino in New York City, hands down." This beloved Upper East Side café, patisserie and restaurant is a favorite of the trendy fashion crowd. Sant Ambroeus is known for their fabulous Italian espresso and coffee drinks as well as cookies, gelato and delectable cakes.

Optical Illusions
"I'm obsessed with the long black and white optical dresses from Marc Jacobs.” The geometric elements were everywhere at Marc Jacobs this spring. From the zigzag op-art patterns to the shoes with checkered heels.  The look is modern, cool and assertive but never in your face.

Shopping List
"I love this Balenciaga look. It's definitely on my shopping wish list!" This season, Balenciaga took a slight departure from androgyny and opted for a more feminine, albeit edgy, collection. Like this flouncy flamingo style skirt and sculpted black and white crepe crop top, a highlight from the brand’s spring/summer collection.

Pocket Sunnies
"I love my Persol folding sunglasses. I take them everywhere." An Italian favorite, Persol is best known for its intrinsic class and elegance. Available at Optica Bal Harbour, the Italian-made sunglasses are both solidly constructed and extremely durable making them the ultimate beach bag essential.

Flattered
"I love to walk in New York, so I started buying more flats, like this Sergio Rossi sandal to get around faster." This season’s Sergio Rossi collection brought lots of sass and spice. Patterns, embellishments and neons let the maximalist rejoice!

Scent of a Lady
"Amongst other essentials like my phone and lipstick, my Frederic Malle Une Rose perfume is always in my purse." Available at Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour, the intoxicating, fruity notes of Turkish rose absolute finish with a sensual and earthy black truffle accord and brings to mind the essence of a rose garden.

Color Croc
"I've been eyeing a bright color crocodile bag from Nancy Gonzalez." Available at Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour, Nancy Gonzalez has become synonymous with luxury and color. Her exquisite handbags are best known for their vibrant hues and exotic skins and are handcrafted by local artisans in her native Colombia.
