Gee Beauty's founding family, from left: Celene, Stephanie, Miriam and Natalie.

By Tali Jaffe

Miriam Gee is no stranger to the beauty industry. Having began her career as a makeup artist, working behind the scenes at photo shoots and for private clients, she quickly gained recognition for her discerning taste and knack for color and was hired as a beauty editor at one of Canada’s leading fashion magazines.

Then, after much talk (over many years) about starting her own beauty studio, it was one of her daughters, Natalie, who pushed her to finally make the move. She opened Gee Beauty in Toronto in 2005 with Natalie, and soon her other two daughters, Celene and Stephanie, joined the company.

This week marks another major milestone for the Gee girls: the opening of their first Gee Beauty outpost, right here in Bal Harbour Shops.

We caught up with Miriam just before opening day to discuss beauty secrets, Gee’s must-haves (and do’s) and maintaining a gorgeous complexion at any age.

Congratulations on the new Gee boutique! What made you choose Bal Harbour for your first new outpost?
Thank you! Bal Harbour Shops has always been one of our favorite Florida shopping destinations, so it was a clear choice that we wanted to share it with our discerning clients.

What are your three favorite products at Gee?
For best results, I use my top three products together: Skin Ceuticals CE Feurelic, Tata Harper Rejuvinating Serum and Gee Beauty Liquid to Powder Mineral Foundation with SPF 20.

What's the most unique service available at Gee?
Definitely the Gee Beauty Brow and our Ultimate Oxygen Facial. We’re masters of brow threading and shaping and our Ultimate Oxygen Facial delivers dramatically healthier, more youthful, glowing skin with each treatment.

You run the company with your daughters; what is that like to have built a family business?
It’s one of my greatest accomplishments because I have utmost trust and admiration for my partners. I feel very proud of my team and the work we’ve done to become the best in our field.

You began your career as a makeup artist and later a beauty editor. How did that turn into Gee Beauty?
I always aspired to open a makeup studio where I could bring my dreams to reality. I saw a gap in the industry for a modern approach to beauty and I knew it was only a matter of time before we brought our concept to life. Natalie worked with me to develop the plan and together we made Gee Beauty a reality.

What is your one no-fail beauty tip?
It’s all about prepping the canvas before you paint the masterpiece. Treat the skin to a hydrating spray or a resurfacing mask about 30 min before applying foundation to help even out the skin tone. This allows your foundation to glide on for a completely flawless finish.

What does your own daily beauty regimen entail?
I'm dedicated! Whatever I do, I do often because consistency is the key to an effective regimen. I cleanse my face and use a separate cleanser for my eyes. I exfoliate regularly and use serums and masks, but the real secret is that I constantly update my routine with new products.

At Gee Beauty, we believe that your regimen has to fit you and your unique lifestyle. If you want to use just two products, we’ll ensure you have the most effective, result-driven two products available.

Best beauty secret you learned on the job?
The art of contouring the face with bronzer and blush. It's all about defining the features and enhancing the client's natural beauty.
