Strike a Pose


Yogi-turned-author Mandy Ingber recently visited Bal Harbour Shops to present her first book, The New York Times bestselling "Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover." We caught up with Ingber while she was in town to discuss the process of writing her first book, her celebrity clientele and if there's a Yoga pose she's met that she doesn't like. 


What was the process like for you in publishing your first book?
The hardest part was starting the process. I thought I might need a ghost writer or co-author, having never written a book before. I was intimidated because I was a voracious reader as a child. The moment I decided to write it myself, I got excited. That was a good indicator that I was going in the right direction. I realized I had a lot of support. I had an editor, and an assistant—I knew I would have help from others. I was advised to use the same discipline that I have for taking care of my mind and body. I spent two hours a day writing. No more and no less.


At the end of three and a half months, I had my manuscript. I was simply sharing what I have been sharing for 20 years in my classes. It was a matter of getting it on paper. The visuals were next, I employed my friend, the talented artist and photographer, Javiera Estrada. My process is the process of elimination, so often, I need to find what I don't like and go from there. Ultimately, I loved working with my editor and the team that went into making this possible. I wrote it myself with a lot of help. Ultimately it has helped me to walk my talk and break through a lot of limiting beliefs. 


You've been a Yoga instructor for more than 15 years, how has your practice developed over time?
My practice actually began when I was a child. My father brought yoga into my life, and I was seeking his approval and attention. It was something I continued to do: I knew it was good for me, but I didn't always love it. I have always included other fitness activities, but then I came across Spinning and became an instructor. This actually informed my yoga, and I was known to bring my Zen to the bike. That really opened up my practice and my mind-body connection. Today, I love the journey and the process. I am far less goal-oriented than I was when I was younger. In fact, I feel that I am bringing my yoga of self-love and self-care into all that I do. 

When did your celebrity following begin to develop?
My celebrity following began when I was a Spinning instructor in the 90's. I had a killer class, and they would sell out 24 hours ahead of time within three minutes. The classes would regularly have celebrities like Helen Hunt, Brooke Sheilds, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgewick, Alanis Morrisette, Maria Shriver. It was packed all the time. To be honest, the beauty of that was that we were all connected. No difference between a celebrity and the rest of the crowd. The connection to celebrity has always been a part of my life. 


What are some of the lesser-known benefits of Yoga?
Self-knowledge. Yoga also regulates the nervous system, improves athletic performance, reduces stress and improves joyfulness (not by itself, but through a shift in attitude). One of the misconceptions of yoga is that it is a cure-all. Sometimes your yoga should be taking it easy or taking a run or a walk. One can bring a yogic mindset of both/and, light/dark to all that one does.
