Bottega Veneta Revives a Classic

Fashion News

Certain films have a way of leaving an indelible mark on our shared memory. A scene can stick with us thanks to song or script, or sometimes a more benign detail that you didn’t even realize you were downloading. In the case of the seminal film American Gigolo, which was loaded with memorable cinematic moments, one understated accessory carried by lead actress Lauren Hutton stands out from the rest.

Bottega Veneta’s soft, intrecciato leather clutch in a particular shade of crimson red was carried by Lauren’s Michelle throughout the movie. The signature style is the perfect marriage of casual elegance, and looking back to its debut 37 years ago, it’s clearly a classic piece that will never fall out of fashion.

After the film wrapped, the clutch was delivered to Bottega Veneta’s archive where it remained until last year, when it was brought back out for a special anniversary revival. Last September in Milan, the brand kicked off its 50th anniversary with a celebratory runway show featuring none other than Ms. Hutton wrapped in a trench and carrying the original iconic bag from American Gigolo under her arm.

Relaunched this spring as “The Lauren 1980,” the oversize clutch is available in one color, “gigolo red,” and is available in select stores this month, including Bal Harbour Shops.
