The New Crop

Fashion News
Gucci’s cropped metallic jacquard jacket would work equally well with jeans and a T-shirt.

Any sadness over the diminishing days of Summer vanishes with the realization it’s almost time for Fall’s lavish layers. A cropped statement jacket is an effortless way to take on the season’s dominant trend for indulgent-leaning fashion—and make an artful segue into the next season.

A military-inspired jacket is a must-have this season, but it’s less G.I. Jane and more Napoleon Bonaparte. Naturally Alessandro Michele was a leader on this fashion front. Gucci’s Renaissance-inspired metallic jacquard jacket features exaggerated puff sleeves and mink fur details. Think strong-shouldered and adorned with epaulettes, brass buttons and rope trim—with feminine touches like crystals and metallic detail.

Dolce & Gabbana paired extravagant military-esque silhouettes—bejeweled and be-roped—with luxurious track pants. It was part of a fairy tale fantasy collection, albeit a feminized version of The Nutcracker’s toy soldier army.

Over at Roberto Cavalli, Peter Dundas detailed cropped velvet jackets with intricate Baroque embroidery. He perfected his signature ’70s rock chick look with graphic tees, trailing Lurex scarves and impeccably tailored high-waist pants.

Valentino showed that varsity jackets are still a force in the fashion world. This little number from Pre-Fall is embroidered with beading and thread to create the “Astro Couture” motif.

What would a Chanel show be without the brand’s iconic tweed? Karl made us rethink pink with this fuchsia suit from a collection that paid homage to the house’s heritage. Maybe the matchy look isn’t for everyone, but the cropped jacket on its own… just ponder the possibilities.

Chloé’s fall show has a cool backstory: Claire Waight Keller was inspired by Anne-France Dautheville, a gorgeous Frenchwoman who rode across Europe and the Middle East on a motorbike in the 1970s. Channel your inner biker babe with this shrunken racing jacket in luxurious calfskin. It’s a fresh update on the classic black leather jacket.

Known for her effortlessly elegant designs, Stella McCartney delivers with this denim bomber. Lace bodice detail and the modern silhouette take it into statement jacket territory.
