Runway looks from Gucci's Fall 2011 Collection.

By Tali Jaffe

Frida Giannini is a fan of Seventies glamour. For the last two seasons Gucci’s creative director has produced collections heavily influenced by Yves Saint Laurent—but with its own distinctive flair.

With Fall on its way, we can look forward to seeing the more is more look of Gucci with its luxe materials, a palette of deep jewel tones, lots of flowing fabric and plenty of fur. And to complement the thoroughly Seventies vibe, there’s a new bag line in stores now, simply called the Seventies collection.

Designed by Giannini, this collection of leather and hound’s tooth bags is totally vintage in feel—and that’s the point. Materials are treated so as to look worn in with a new washing process that gives each piece a unique, lived-in look.

Perhaps Giannini has taken notice of the many young ladies seen on the street clutching their (or maybe their mother’s) vintage Gucci; so worn in that the logo print and web detailing have faded in some places. Whatever the inspiration may be for the new Seventies collection, we’re grateful for it!

The Seventies bags reinterpret the house’s iconic patterns and materials with an opulent touch. Pigskin and fabric alternate in a hound’s tooth pattern paired with inserts of the historic web, for a retro feel. Even the interior fabric—red cotton—is washed to appear as though it’s seen more than one decade’s worth of goodies held within its keep.

Golden detailing, large handles and a leather shoulder strap appear across three female versions as well as the male version, along with wallets and foulards to complete the collection.

The collection also ushers in Gucci’s new personalization service, whereby every Seventies bag will be customized with the golden initials of its owner.
