Prada sunglasses from the Minimal Baroque collection.

By Tali Jaffe

No longer an afterthought, sunglasses are taking center stage this summer with a slew of daring new looks from our favorite designers. If we had to pick one overall trend, it would be the return of the cat eye and other retro looks.

But not everyone is following suit. Miuccia Prada has taken the cat eye for a spin, resulting in a somewhat psychedelic collection called Minimal Baroque. It seems like these sunglasses have caused a fashion frenzy, and they’ve even given way to a series of photographic projects by leading contemporary artists. On view in select Prada boutiques worldwide, artists including Federica Di Giovanni, Kuba Dabrowski, Ciraudo Majola, Mattia Buffoli, Rosi di Stefano, Tassili Calatroni, Tatiana Uzlova and Tomás Nogueira have lent their talents to render the glasses in a new light for a project titled “Minimal-Baroque Sunglasses Project: Fron Drawings to Pictures.”

Here’s a look at some of the other sunnies that have caught our eye and will certainly decorate yours this summer.

Before Tom Ford started designing for women again (thank goodness those days are behind us), we had to get our Ford fix with eyewear. And boy did we ever. It was hard to spot a face without his oversize wire frames. But now he’s zooming in on perfectly circular shades, also seen at Marc Jacobs.

Leave it to Karl to refine the cat eye to such chic effect. These Chanel sunglasses in fire red are also available in pink, tortoise, black and turquoise.

Chloé’s large lenses in three shades of grey are a safe bet for summer. Grey is a refreshing change from the usual tortoise or black, and the wide frames and ombre-tinted lenses make for a glamorous effect.

Dior also picked up on the retro cat-eye—but kicked it up a notch. Mixing color and pattern for a bold new look, make a statement in one glance.

Think of these as the artist’s aviator. In a selection of both shapes and colors, Fendi brings an edgy feel to the always-popular traditional aviator.

Tory Burch likes to keep it classic, while infusing a bit of nostalgia into her looks. You can be sure an old family photo album from summers in Antigua inspired these lenses. Burch gets a little more playful for summer by kicking up the styles with new colors and patterns.
