Wedding Fever

Fashion News
Oscar de la Renta

By Tali Jaffe

In less than two weeks two billion people will be tuned in to one of the most anticipated events of the year: the royal wedding. Rumors have been circling for months as to who will design Kate Middleton’s wedding gown, with the odds weighing heavily in favor for a UK designer.

Perhaps in a final attempt to sway some favor for American designers, last week’s Spring Bridal collections were especially impressive. Maybe it’s just bridal fever, but the looks from Oscar de la Renta—all 37 of them—Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Marchesa and Monique Lhullier, in particular, had us swooning.

Bridal has become a major sector for many fashion houses, some to the point of creating bridal diffusion lines, like Wang’s White by Vera Wang label and the forthcoming line from Marchesa for Priscilla of Boston, in order to meet the demand for designer bridal. But this season’s bridal collections erred on the side of princess, rather than High Street, replete with royal headwear. Highlights from the Romona Keveza presentation at the St. Regis hotel included Chopard tiaras: one featuring 2,113 diamonds and another one with a 37-carat diamond, both flown in from Geneva with a security guard who waited in the wings backstage.

Carolina Herrera’s bridal collection had traces of previous looks from her Ready-to-Wear collections, like the use of a tricolor fabric that was sculpted into a wedding gown, seen here. Similarly, Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig incorporated a few signature ready-to-wear accents, such as sheer fabrics and capelike draping into their bridal looks. Oscar de la Renta not only sent out his usual flurry of organza and silk tulle gowns, but he also included some looks that may be preferred by some less traditional brides. Among the departures were a floor-length organza caftan atop an embroidered bikini and a white mink mini-dress with a ruched bodice.
