Your first look at the CFDA Awards

Fashion News

Depending on which circles you find yourself in, the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards nominations can have as much weight as the Oscar nominations. And since many of the nominated designers dress Hollywood’s hottest, perhaps they’re even more relevant, considering how much coverage is given to the Red Carpet pre-show.

The awards are given to American fashion designers whose companies are based in the U.S. So not only do these awards celebrate fashion, they really hone in on the greatest influences in American fashion. So perhaps it’s all the more fitting that in this age of runway coverage via fashion blogger—some of whom are too young to even have their driver’s license—that this year’s nominees are an especially young bunch, with an average age hovering somewhere around 29. In fact, only three of the nominated designers are over the age of 40.

So, who did the Council of fashion Designers of America’s Selection Committee nominate? Let’s take a look …

Accessory nominees include Alexander Wang, Reed Krakoff and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. Then there’s also the highly coveted Swarovski Awards, which are given to the rising stars in the aforementioned categories. Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung and the Row’s Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were nominated for Womenswear; Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim and Robert Geller were nominated for Menswear; and Eddie Borgo, Alejandro Ingelmo, Jason Wu and Pamela Love were nominated for Accesory Design.

Other awards include the Fashion Icon Award, which is being presented to Lady Gaga; the International Award, which is being presented to Phoebe Philo and photographer Arthur Elgort is being honored with the CFDA Board of Directors’ Special Tribute Award.

You’ll have to wait until June to find out who the winners are, but with nominations in three categories, the odds are looking pretty favorable for Alexander Wang.
