An Ode to Loulou

“Loulou de la Falaise,” edited by Ariel de Ravenel and written by Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni (Rizzoli New York, 2014).

She may have been the original la bohéme. Not the tattered gypsy, but the otherworldly free-spirit whose tribe is heavy on the fashion scene. Traveling with a stylish set—including Halston, whom she assisted, before moving to Paris to work alongside Yves Saint Laurent—Loulou de la Falaise was renowned for her effortless bohemian chic.

She spent 30 years working alongside Saint Laurent, and, a designer in her own right, Loulou forged a professional reputation creating extraordinary jewelry and accessories, both for Yves Saint Laurent as well as for her own collection. Her influential personal style no doubt made her creations all the more alluring.

The many facets of her life are captured in “Loulou de la Falaise,” edited by Ariel de Ravenel, a Paris-based fashion consultant who also runs de la Falaise’s brand. With a foreword by Pierre Bergé, Saint Laurent’s long-time partner, and interviews with Loulou’s intimates including Betty Catroux, Inès de la Fressange, Diane von Furstenberg, Christian Louboutin, Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, André Leon Talley, and Oscar de la Renta, this elegant volume features more than 400 images by legendary contemporary photographers, from Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon to Steven Meisel, Michael Roberts, and Bettina Rheims.
