Oscar de la Renta Takes on Dallas

Culture Watch
There's nothing mellow about these yellow gowns on view at "Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style” in Dallas.

Oscar de la Renta—which opens in its new space fashioned after the brand's Madison Avenue flagship at Bal Harbour on Friday—is one of the most celebrated fashion houses of our time, known for its feminine, form-fitting silhouettes and the designer's brilliant ability to blend different colors, patterns and fabrics into dazzling works of wearable art.

Currently on display at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas, “Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style” is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition spanning the designer’s 50-year career. The retrospective is comprised of more than 60 exquisite pieces, some of which are on view to the public for the very first time.

In fitting with the venue (which opened last May), the exhibition highlights First Lady fashion by showcasing de la Renta designs worn by Barbara and Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan and Hilary Clinton. It also includes the exquisite silk organza wedding dress worn by Jenna Bush during her 2008 nuptials. Other themes explored throughout the show include de la Renta’s use of florals and his strong Spanish and Dominican influences.

Also on display are evening gowns worn on the red carpet by A-list celebrities, including Amy Adams’ 2014 Met Gala gown, Carrie Underwood’s 2014 Country Music Awards gown, and the dress worn by Anne Hathaway when she hosted the Oscars in 2011.

“Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style” runs through October 5, 2014.
