The Creative Set

Culture Watch

How many times have you wondered what kind of sofa Beyonce sits on? Or which type of dish soap Gwyneth Paltrow uses (though she’s likely to share that on goop) or what type of silverware Alexander Wang has? A new book, “Behind Closed Doors: The Private Homes of 25 of the World's Most Creative People” gives us that fly-on-the-wall access we’ve all fantasized about.

Written by Rob Meyers—a frequent contributor to Arena Homme+, POP, Wallpaper, World of Interiors and Nylon magazines—“Behind Closed Doors,” provides us a glimpse into the homes of 25 creative personalities, from music, art, film and fashion indsutries. Meyers gives us an exclusive opportunity to discover the person behind a celebrity by diving into their real-life domestic environment.

Meyers sent out disposable cameras to artists, musicians, photographers and bloggers—most of whom he met through his career and while studying at Central Saint Martins in London—to snap pictures of their edgy, stylish and oftentimes peculiar interiors.

The stars then selected views that they feel best defined them. These include Martha Stewart’s six refrigerators in her New York home; Courtney Love’s wedding cake topper collection; Jeremy Scott’s collection of Memphis furniture and Olivier Theyskens’ Lego model of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater.

Meyers gathered and edited through images over the course of five years before narrowing down his selection to 25 personalities. Their intimate snapshots fill the pages of this enchanting book, which at times feels like flipping through your favorite Instagram feed.

The book also features a foreword by Rupert Thomas, editor in chief of World of Interiors magazine, which provides an interesting contrast in perspective coming from one of the most revered interior design magazines.
