The Art of Fashion Photography by Patrick Remy.

With the deluge of gallery openings last week and the official start of the summer art season, we thought it was a good time to revisit one of our favorite artistic expressions: fashion photography. A coffee-table must for fashion lovers is “The Art of Fashion Photography” by Patrick Remy, published by Prestel.

Before America’s Next Top Model introduced us to fashion photographer Nigel Barker, the world of photography in fashion remained largely ‘behind-the-scenes.’ Now, fashion photographers are increasingly recognized for their fusion of the worlds of art and fashion, positioning cutting-edge photography at the forefront of the fashion industry.

Photographers like Jeff Burton, Roe Ethridge, Marilyn Minter and Viviane Sassen—all featured in “The Art of Fashion Photography”—have become widely recognized in the fashion and fine art worlds. To wit, fashion photography has become a major draw at museums and big ticket items at auction.

Just last year, Christie’s auctioned 59 lots of photos, paintings and sculptures of fashion icon Kate Moss, resulting in a $1.5 million auction. Christian Dior has a yearly exhibition at the Musée Christian Dior to demonstrate just how important photography is for Dior’s worldwide success. And one of the author’s chosen photographers—Miami-born Roe Ethridge—is collected by MoMA, LA MoCA, Tate Modern and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston while exhibiting across the globe.

Remy uncovers how these famed fashion photographers navigate the delicate balance between art and commerce. In full-page color and black-and-white photographs, each artist brings a unique range of styles and techniques to show the diversity that is “fashion photographer.”
