Fashion photography is quickly moving up the ranks in the realm of fine art. Auction prices continue to rise for the great lensmen of our time, with Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Herb Ritts among those earning above their estimates. And many esteemed art museums are acquiring works—perhaps in the hopes of garnering Met-McQueen size audiences—for their permanent collections.

Franca Sozzani, Vogue Italia and L’Uomo Vogue’s editor in chief, has had the chance to commission many of the great photographers of our time through the pages of her magazines. So it couldn’t have been more fitting for Sozzani to celebrate a milestone at L’Uomo Vogue with a tribute to the image makers who have marked her time there.

It was a celebration that came at the close of Men’s Fashion Week, and the heavy-hitting crowd of fashion designers, celebrities and friends were all there to support Sozzani as the occasion marked five years at the helm of L’Uomo Vogue.

Instead of your run of the mill cocktail blowout, Sozzani organized a charity auction with Sotheby’s to raise money for Fashion 4 Development, a global campaign, which supports educational programs and the development of the textile industry in Ghana and Nigeria. Sozzani is a Goodwill Ambassador.

The sale consisted of 40 single copies of special-edition covers, including those graced by Tilda Swinton, Sean Penn, Michael Jackson, Keith Richards and Morgan Freeman. Nearly $150,000 was raised through the sale of works by Paolo Roversi, Bruce Weber, Ellen von Unwerth and Francesco Carrozini, among others, and the cover that fetched the highest bid was the Richards portrait by Francesco Carrozzini, which sold for $12,885.

Among those at the event were Bruno Frisoni, Thom Browne, Killian Hennessy, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Peter Copping, Hugo Becker, Ines de la Fressange, Renzo Rosso, Alexis Mabille, Gaia Repossi, Sue Whiteley and Thom Browne.
