Made in Italy

Diego Della Valle with his brother Andrea.

Diego Della Valle is a very busy man. Besides being president and CEO of the Tod’s Group, the Italian luxury group with brands including Hogan, Roger Vivier and Tod’s—the leather goods house responsible for everyone’s favorite driving shoe—Della Valle has been working on another venture that is very close to home.

Dubbed “Project Italia” by Della Valle, Tod’s Group is sponsoring a massive renovation project of one of Rome’s most important structures; the Colosseum. Hardly a minor undertaking, we agree, but with a hefty donation of  25 million euros, Della Valle is committed to restoring and preserving Italian culture, one marble column at a time.

In a recent statement, Della Valle indicated that he hopes to cause a chain reaction of responsible cultural patronage amongst his peers. “We hope this important initiative encourages other companies and private patrons proud of our culture and country to follow,” he said. “These signals could mark the beginning of a series of similar initiatives, strengthening our country’s image and credibility worldwide.”
Tod’s is known for its leather goods designed and produced in Italy, so it seems a natural fit that Della Valle has chosen an initiative like this one that reflects the desire to protect and promote Italian culture.

Clearly Tod’s has a cultural agenda at hand. In recent months the company became a member of the Teatro alla Scala Foundation, and will be donating more than $7 million to the famous Milan theatre. We saw early signs of Tod’s commitment to the theater with its special edition ballet shoe that was inspired by La Scala, as well as the short film, “An Italian Dream,” which was screened all over the world since last Fall.

Renovation work will begin next month and is set to be complete in three years.
