Polo Cup Host Donna Karan.

By Tali Jaffe

The fourth annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic took place on New York’s Governor’s Island last week, and there was plenty more than horse power on display. Hosted by Donna Karan, Nacho Figueras and Marc Jacobs, the event drew crowds of well-heeled— and well-hatted—women, and even the men took advantage of the opportunity to dapper it up. Perhaps the Royal Wedding fueled some of the fashion choices, but everyone in attendance took their Sunday best and glammed it up a notch.

Hugh Jackman served as the event’s emcee, and, perhaps channeling his Broadway persona, occasionally broke out into song. Figueras, the dazzling Argentine polo champion (and Ralph Lauren model) led the Black Watch team, which played against the Veuve Clicquot team with Brazil's Rico Mansur serving as its captain. Figueras, an overall ambassador for the sport, was in attendance with his wife Delfina Blaquier, dressed in head-to-toe Marc Jacobs, and their young son.

The VIP tents were overflowing with glitterati like Andre Balasz, Dani Stahl, Julianna Marguiles, Sanaa Lathan, Alek Wek, Jeff Halmos, Lisa Mayock and Lorenzo Martone, Naomi Watts, Whitney Port, Shenae Grimes, Erin Fetherston, Isla Fisher and Amber Heard.

For those on the main grass, there was plenty of entertainment as well. On one occasion Figueras jumped the field lines and trotted his horse down the path of cheering fans, reaching out an arm in true rock star fashion.

While Black Watch took home the win, the event’s real beneficiary was Hope Help and Rebuild Haiti, an initiative of Urban Zen, Donna Karan’s foundation. Hope, Help & Rebuild Haiti is the next evolution of the work started by Karan and her Urban Zen Foundation. It was developed immediately following the January 2010 earthquake with music executive Andre Harrell, the Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, Andres Balazs and The Standard.
