It seems that each year retailers prepare for the holiday season a bit earlier than the last. Fireworks barely fizzle from sight before twinkling lights and tinsel fill shop windows. But there’s one holiday harbinger that’s always a welcome sight: the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book.

Assouline has captured more than 70 years of the department store’s legendary holiday catalogue in the more than 100 playfully illustrated pages of Over the Top: 50 Years of Fantasy Gifts from the Neiman Marcus Christmas Catalogue. Some of the fantasy books pictured here include a fully-equipped diner for $195,000 (1997), an edible monopoly board for $600 (1978) and a submarine for $20 million (2000).
